As a private investigator in Baltimore, I am often asked about what I do and who uses our services. I wish I had an easy, buttoned-down answer to offer. But, the truth is, I don’t. One thing is for sure, I’m not driving around in a Ferrari in Hawaii. Every day and every case is different and it often requires me to wear many hats. I often tell people that at its simplest, easiest explanation, I find the facts and present the truth to help people make the best decisions moving forward. This leads me to the second part of the question- who uses the services of private investigators? Most commonly, our services are retained by lawyers and insurance companies for litigation support, “corporate America”, and commercial businesses. For example, we locate hard-to-find witnesses so they can be interviewed, we uncover and verify material facts like addresses, social security numbers, marriages and divorces, professional licenses, bankruptcies and judgments, background investigations to reveal assets for civil litigation (this is most common in divorce cases), we perform surveillance, and investigations for insurance companies, and present evidence to be used against suspected fraudulent insurance claims, we conduct pre-employment and executive level background investigations, assist in high-profile or high-risk employee terminations, conduct forensic interviews, and investigate ethics hotline complaints. That being said, private citizens often retain our services, too. We can locate long lost relatives, conduct investigations on stalkers, locate assets such as boats, aircraft, or vehicles, locate bank account information (within the context of the limitations of the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Financial Services Modernization Act of 1999), verify marriage licenses and divorce decrees, phone numbers, death records, conduct surveillance investigations on suspected spousal infidelity cases or conduct surveillance investigations or child custody cases, conduct tenant suitability investigations for landlords or residential and commercial properties, and pretty much find out what people are doing.
We provide some specialized services, too. For example, one of our associate investigators is a 20+ year veteran homicide detective of the Baltimore City Police Department. We are one of the few investigative firms in Maryland that conduct equivocal death investigations. Quite simply, it is an investigation surrounding the death of a person where there is uncertainty as to the cause of death. We also conduct cold-case investigations for homicides as well as other criminal cases such as missing persons and pick up where the police left off. Another associate investigator is a 20+ year veteran polygraph examiner and homicide detective of the Baltimore City Police Department. We administer polygraph examinations at the request of attorneys, private citizens, and for employment to some companies and law enforcement agencies that are not protected by the Employee Polygraph Protection Act. For example, this would include armored car companies and law enforcement agencies.
You can see that private investigators provide services across a broad spectrum of potential clients and industries. One thing however, remains constant throughout- the discovery and presentation of facts to our clients so that they can make the best decision moving forward.
