NY Alimony & Cohabitation Investigations
As New York-licensed private investigators, we get a myriad of private investigative requests each day. These requests run the gamut, ranging from unfaithful spouses, to business due diligence, to unsolved homicides. Each day has its own unique caseload, and the requirements of the job vary from day to day. In fact, this is just one of the facets of this industry that most private investigators love so much. Beyond helping others and being afforded the opportunity to creatively problem solve, the variety of circumstances private investigators face on any given day certainly keeps the job interesting.
Often, in spite of the variety, we witness trends in the type of cases we work. In recent years, our private investigations firm has seen an increase of cases concerning alimony and cohabitation. In fact, alimony and cohabitation investigations, falling under our domestic service offerings, seem to be a growing trend, and it’s an area in which investigative success can almost certainly equate to significant savings for our clients.
In fact, let’s take a look at an Alimony & Cohabitation Investigation Case Study, which just so happened to be a huge win- and huge savings- for our client.
Case Study
Here’s the backstory:
An individual, who had been paying alimony for over twelve (12) years, noticed an address change on tax documents from his ex-spouse. Curiosity got the better of him, and he took to the internet only to learn that this newly discovered address belonged to someone other than his ex-spouse.
Per the cohabitation clause in their existing alimony agreement, the receiving party (the ex-spouse) would no longer be entitled to alimony if residence was taken up with a contributing member of a household. In other words, if the ex-spouse lived with another individual who helped pay the bills, then the ex-spouse would forfeit monthly alimony payments.
This individual, who had paid his ex-spouse approximately $80,000 annually for twelve (12) years, felt duped. Understandably so.

Snapshot: Investigative Timeline
- Upon case intake, we performed our initial diligence, which included a detailed background check on the Subjects of this investigation: the ex-spouse as well as the male occupant who resided in the same household.
- Databases showed both Subjects residing at the address for the past fourteen (14) months. Further historical research showed both Subjects residing together, at several addresses, for the previous eleven (11) years.
- Surveillance was conducted at the Subject’s current address and all activity was video documented. Over a period of a few weeks, we successfully documented both Subjects equally contributing to the household.
- The evidence was presented to the Client and Client’s counsel.
- The case was closed out.
- A few weeks later, our firm received a call from the Client, informing us that the evidence we obtained not only helped to get his court-ordered alimony payments to stop, but he was awarded a judgment in his favor for repayment of ten (10) years of alimony payments!
To this day, the aforementioned case is without a doubt, the largest monetary award alimony case we’ve had the pleasure to investigate.
